A System of Hierarchy

As corporate environments become more agile, the traditional hierarchy is being called into question. Is it still necessary? Does it fit with the need for quick responses and meaningful work? While there are arguments on both sides, it’s important to acknowledge the negative impact of hierarchy on motivation and collaboration.

Delayering is a common practice in organizations that aims to reduce the number of hierarchical levels in the organizational structure. This can be especially important in industries where speed is key to success. When companies can react more quickly to changing market conditions or customer needs, they are better positioned to succeed (see). However, when viewed through the lens of systems thinking, the impact of delayering extends far beyond the immediate benefits of increased agility.
